02. Is Your IT Resume Ready - 10 Questions

Print this page, so you can place it beside your IT resume and use it as a score card.

The scale is 1 to 10, with 1 being the lowest and 10 the highest. A total of 100 rates as perfect.


1.) Have you listed under their own heading, just after your contact information, the degrees and certifications that you have successfully achieved?

2.) Does your contact information at the top of your resume conform to the addressing rules of Canada, the United States of America and other members of the Universal Postal Union to ensure correct electronic scanning and indexing of your resume?

3.) Where does your gaze go to when you first look at your resume? Does it go to the skills and achievements that make you the unique IT professional that you are?

4.) Have you included a list of achievements for each and every job showing how you have helped to improve productivity, streamline operations, improve morale, cut costs, maximize sales or profits?

5.) Does Your IT Resume include a comprehensive IT Technical Skills Summary listing each and every IT skill in hardware, software, operating systems and applications that you have acquired during the life of your career?

6.) Does each of your job listings include the correct name of your employer, the city that you worked in and quantified description of what the organization did and how many employees worked in how many locations?

7.) Does each of your job listings have a quantified list of your responsibilities and the title of the supervisor to whom you reported?

8.) If you were to graph each job title or skill heading in your resume, how would you rate each one by asking yourself, “Does this job title make my image go up or down in relation to the job and salary I want?” Do all of the job titles and skill headings in your resume present a close match to the job you want?

9.)  Have you listed all of the schools, colleges and training organizations that you have attended including dates and locations complete with the diploma, degree or certification achieved?

10.) Have you listed all of the languages that you speak, including English, on your resume immediately after your Contact Information? And rated your proficiency?

95% - 100%: Your a Winner!   If your resume really is in the Top 5% you should be receiving a high number of first, second and third interviews and negotiating for the salary that you want.

70% - 94%: Above Average but remember that employers only select from the candidates that they perceive are in the top 5%. So that means you will still lose interviews and job offers to applicants who score 95%- 100%!

50% - 69%: Average If your resume scored 69 points or less you are still in big trouble! And your resume has been consigned to File 13 - the waste basket.

0% - 49%: Poor If your resume scored less than 49 points YOU ARE IN BIG TROUBLE! You are probably receiving few, if any, interviews and the job offers that you have been receiving are at minimum wage. Far below what your IT experience and skills should be getting.

No matter what your score, the question is “Are you receiving interviews and getting jobs offers?”

So stop wasting your time in a prolonged job search by using a weak resume. It is time to take action!

If you are not getting interviews or getting the job offers you need take action.

Not Taking Action Costs You Money

Stop wasting time in a prolonged job search by using a weak resume. Remember, each month you’re not working it may cost you a month’s salary - $3,000, $4,000, $5,000, $10,000 or more.
